Short story by Clanbob

Ariel had lived her life on land with her husband for years. It was a happy time for her. Until one day he left to another kingdom and didn’t come back. For months she stayed in her chambers hoping that maybe he would walk though the doors again. While she clung on to hope, her kingdom fell into disarray. In the kings absence the countries trade deals had all expired. The ports were empty. No investments or goods were coming from the sea. Even the fishermen could not collect enough food to provide the whole kingdom. And inside the city itself, the people began to talk of overthrowing the queen if she could not bring back their hope. All this bad news sank deep into her heart but not enough to pull her from her room. The kingdom continued to fall into despair until one very fateful day.

A year to the day after her beloved Eric had disappeared, A man from a foreign land came seeking an audience with Queen Ariel. She sat upon her portion of the joined throne her and her husband once shared. She felt alone and uncomfortable. She had never officiated any deals since she came to the human world. And now she was gambling her kingdoms future on her first negotiation. It didn’t help matters that she wasn’t sure if she ever really fit in. Or if anyone would take her seriously as a ruler the same way they did her father. All she knew for sure is she had only this one chance to save her kingdom as the doors opened to reveal the lone man walking in.

The man entered the room with a slow somber walk. He was dressed in a tailored Italian cut suit with a wide brimmed hat that obscuring most of his face. He carried himself to within 20 feet of the queen when she motioned him to stop. “My servants have told me, you come with an offer to help restore my kingdoms economy.” Said the uncomfortable Ariel as she looked down on the unusually dressed man.
The man took a step forward. “Oh noble queen. I am not here to restore your kingdom. My shipping company comes here to help it grow. We wish to make your kingdom the largest naval trading post in all the 7 seas. With factories and industries the whole world will want to be part of” Ariel became swept up in his words. “Please tell me more Mr?” The man stepped forward again and began to speak. “Call me Mr Blackfish. I travel from port to port and fix…issues like what you are going through right now.” Ariel stood from her seat and went to to him. “You’ve dealt with situations like this before? I want to believe you. But what is the price? We don’t have much left to offer in the treasury. And what do you have to gain from helping us?” The man motioned along side of her. “We don’t ask anything in return. You see our shipping company caters to…unusual tastes. We need ports like yours to help us move our cargo out to sea. Give us 6 months and your people will be the wealthiest in the world. Give us 3 years and they'll have anything they could ever want.” Ariel got excited and agreed without thinking. Mr. Blackfish had her sign his contracts and left to begin his work.

The next six months changed the shape of the kingdom in ways she could never imagine. The docks that once received dignitaries from other kingdoms were replaced with cranes and cargo ships carrying unmarked containers from all over the mainland. The kingdom was slowly becoming an industrial giant. Factories were being built all over. Smokestacks filled the skyline. Pumping out plumes of black smoke. Ariel didn't know what was being done in the kingdom below but her friend Mr. Blackfish was always happy to tell her how happy the people were now. And to shower her in gifts including a new throne for herself she still had yet to use.

Time continued on. Years passed by. Dignitaries from new kingdoms were coming to Ariel begging for the chance to work with her. She was given everything she could ever hope for. All the trinkets a mermaid could ever hope to posses became hers. She loved the feeling of power she now possessed. She only wanted more things. And all she had to do was ask her friend in the suit. It was only after several years she asked the ultimate question of her business partner. One cold stormy night when the sea was as restless as Ariel could ever remember, she called for Mr. Blackfish. As he entered the room he saw her sitting atop her throne for one, clearly enjoying being the omnipotent ruler of the kingdom. “Mr. Blackfish I’ve grown tired of this palace. I want another…No. I want another kingdom. This one has gotten boring.” The man chuckled to himself. “My queen. I believe I already have just what you’ve been asking for. Would you come with us to the docks?” Ariel nodded and followed the man.

They arrived in that evening at a very crowded warehouse by the docks. A line had formed outside of its small entrance. She marveled at the crowd. Even in the horrible weather people were still lined up to see whatever was inside. “I take it these people have something to do with getting me my new kingdom?” Said Ariel as the suited man pushed her through the security gate into the building. “My queen. You’ve never asked me what my company does have you?” Ariel thought about his question only to realize she never had. “You see my queen. We dispose of all those nasty byproducts that are made making all those things we people love. We just take them and dump them where nobody will notice.” Ariel looked shocked at his statement. “Are you saying my kingdom gained all this power because we let people just dump their waste wherever it wont be noticed?” The suited man nodded. “Exactly. We dump a few thousand barrels of waste into the ocean. You get everything you want. Its been a win win. And it just got better.” Ariels smile grew wide and eyes opened with excitement at his tease. “What just got better. Tell me Mr Blackfish” The suited man began to walk her into what looked like a museum of sorts filled with the bones of exotic and spiny fish she’d never seen before. “You see my queen. Our little dumps have done something interesting to the ocean around your kingdom. All the weak fish have died off. And now these creatures of the deep have started popping up all over the place. And thats not the only thing we’ve found.” He stopped just in front of a door leading to the back of the building. Ariel read the words above the door. “The fallen king?” The man in black began to walk around her. “All these new fish started showing up and killing off the old population of the oceans here. And by the looks of things they did something else too. We found something unbelievable. Creatures that are half man, and half fish.” Ariel knew what he meant and walked through the door.

Inside was a brightly lit room with a giant fishtanks stretching up to the ceiling in the center. Inside was her father. He looked weak. His muscles were no longer what they once were. And his tail had lost its shine. He looked up and saw her. He was overwhelmed with emotion. He called out to her. She approached the glass and got close enough to hear him. “Ariel you have to let me out. These bad humans. They've taken what few of us are left. They poisoned our waters. They’ve taken your sisters to other places. Please Ariel. Help me stop them.” His words didn’t connect with Ariel as she was now. She only looked away to her partner and asked, “Where is his Trident?” The man in black snapped his fingers as a security guard grabbed the trident from a case on the wall and brought it to her. The second she grabbed it she felt more power then she would have ever imagined. Her form changed. Spines began to protrude from her clothing. She now looked like one of those fish in the previous lobby. She looked to her father with a devious smile. “I should thank you daddy. You let me stay on the land. Become queen when Eric died. You never reached out to me after that. Did you daddy? Its ok. I probably would have run back home if you did. Look at me. I own everything here now. And now that I have you trident… I guess I own the sea too.” The king smashed his hands against the glass as hard as he could. Calling out. Trying to reach her. But it was too late. She was already walking away. “Mr. Black. Keep up the good work. I’m going for a swim. I have another kingdom to introduce myself to. Be a dear and find me another.” Before she left the room, the king said one last thing that reached her ears. “Ariel! Its not too late! You don’t have to be this way. You can be good again.” Ariel laughed as she looked back at him. “You know daddy, your right. I could go back to being a good girl…But I love being this bad girl so much more.” She said as she walked out of the room. Cackling like the true sea witch she had become.
